5 Minute Madness! (This one was 11 minutes.)
Salt lay in his cart, looking at the sky. It was always so much closer in his hometown. He gently moved Jin off of his body, covering her naked body. He looked at the rising sun, and thought about his place in the world. Everything was perfect. Married at seventeen, he loved his job, and it had even made him fairly rich. He travelled the world, his fifth child was on the way. He felt happy, but…
Salt felt unfulfilled. He thought about Joss, his older brother. The man was homeless, warping to other worlds, creating matter from nothing. He was a genius, a fulfilled man. Salt thought of Ukog, the wild man. He had also settled down with a woman, adventured less. But he had dreams, and he achieved them. Ukog ran the most successful raids the North Metch had seen since he and Jin were in the army, he lead the dark wolves, a seemingly rabid race of beasts. He tamed them, and befriended them.
“What have I done with my life? I’m thirty, and I have so much, but… what do I aspire to?”
“You help people.” Jin was awake. She sat up and clung to his back.
“Do I? I help myself.”
“Follow the One’s teaching, give all you have, even when you have nothing left.”
He nodded. Salt knew in an instant, as if by divine inspiration, what he had to do with his life.
“We’re leaving this place for a long time. We’re going to the Djeb, the city of Birth. We… we will follow the teachings and become Paladins, heroes of light!”
Jin looked at him and smiled. He always came up with ridiculous plans, and he always followed through in some shape or form. She took a deep breath and held it in. Her hair turned white, a ritual she did at the start of each day. She let out the air from her lungs and felt her belly.
“This one will be born on the road then.”
“Where did you throw my clothes last night?”
