Ian Hill is the powerful bassist of Judas Priest. He picks his guitar and provides a strong backbone for the twin lead guitars.
Ian Hill is:
-> The longest running member of Judas Priest, now the K.K. has moved on. (See the graph, Ian is the straight blue line)
-> Ian Hill is the only bassist Priest has ever had
-> Ian Hill is now 64. He was married to Rob Halford’s sister for 8 years back in the 70s/80s
-> He uses a pick because he prefers the heavy metal sound it adds
-> He is very enthusiastic about the new album Redeemer of Souls, saying it’s the best one yet. Halford actually agrees, saying if you’re newest isn’t your best, then what are you doing with your career (something along those lines…)
-> Hill has laser focus on stage, you can see that most of the time he rocks up and down to the beat. It kind of looks like he’s having his own little party stage right.
-> Ian Hill and K.K. Downing founded Judas Priest, and he brought Rob Halford into the band. We Priest fans owe a lot to him!
Many bands use their drummer as the backbone, to keep rhythm and be consistent. With the twin guitar attack that is signature of Priest, Ian became a second backbone, keeping the band sharp edged. He’s so good at it that Scott Travis has more freedom to be an epic drummer. (Personal opinion, but the drums in Painkiller, Cold Blooded and Halls of Valhalla speak for themselves.)
